According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s recent report on homelessness, 580,466 people experienced homelessness in the United States on a single night in 2020, up 12,751 people, or 2.2% from 2019. And this problem isn’t new. Homelessness is an ongoing problem that’s been difficult if not impossible to solve. However, as Tara Dawson McGuinness and Hana Schank discovered when they were researching their book, Power to the Public: The Promise of Public Interest Technology, public interest technology (PIT) practitioners are making big strides towards a solution. They’re doing so by taking on the broken processes, outdated and difficult forms, and unforeseen roadblocks that keep people from using the public support system that’s already in place.
