Bridging the Gaps in Disability Policy

The Americans with Disabilities Act turned 35 this year, and although we have come a long way in advancing the rights of people with disabilities, millions are still waiting for the future the law promised. Our nation is failing to meet the needs of the one in four Americans who are disabled. Our existing framework of policies and systems for this growing population is fragmented across sectors, each operating in isolation with its own eligibility requirements, application processes, and service limitations. This lack of disability-informed, cross-sector approaches leads to policy solutions that may be theoretically sound but are practically ineffective, with unintended consequences that can worsen rather than improve outcomes.
Now more than ever, we need evidence-based solutions, informed by people with lived experience and designed by policy experts who can bridge these gaps. In a forum hosted by New America, two panels will discuss the real-world challenges and practical solutions for creating a more cohesive, disability-informed policy framework for all.
Panel 1: Promises of the ADA: What People with Disabilities Still Need
Panel 2: Policy Paths to Inclusion: Disability in FocusĀ
Panelists will be announced soon!
Join New America on October 15 for this discussion followed by a reception where we can continue the conversation over wine and refreshments. Panels will be presented virtually for those attending remotely.
New America strives to make the forum inclusive for all participants. CART and ASL will be provided throughout the duration of the panels. In-person ASL interpreters are available upon request for the reception on the event registration form. Please request any additional accommodations on the event registration form.
