‘Fear and Excitement’ Are Driving AI Discourse in Government

Lilian Coral, vice president of New America’s technology and democracy programs, and Neil Kleiman, urban policy professor at Northeastern University’s public policy school, joined StateScoop's Priorities Podcast to discuss RethinkAI's expansive report on how states are using and thinking about AI.

Neil: As civic tech champions, we've always been about how technology can truly open up government and the public sector and I don't think it's gotten us that far over the past few decades, but AI has the possibility to truly level the playing field.

Lilian: We have more state-level AI bills that are going up in terms of guardrails and privacy protections that I think have also in some ways created opportunities for states to not only lead with the guardrails but also to really lead on the implementation front.
