Levi Tillemann

Levi Tillemann was a New America fellow. He is the author of The Great Race: The Global Quest for the Car of the Future (Simon & Schuster 2015), an analysis of the rise of electric vehicles and the intersection between policy and innovation in the global auto industry. His commentary has appeared in venues including the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, CSPAN, MSNBC, the Diane Rehm Show and NPR's Marketplace. Dr. Tillemann is also a regular contributor to Slate. Previously, he served as the Special Advisor to the Office of Policy and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy and chaired the Department’s Autonomous and Connected Vehicles Energy (ACE) Working Group. Before that, Tillemann was the CEO of IRIS Engines, a company he founded to develop a smaller, more efficient and more powerful combustion engine. As an associate director at IHS CERA, Tillemann assisted Daniel Yergin in writing and researching his New York Times bestseller The Quest and a new edition of The Prize. He is proficient in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. Tillemann is a graduate of Yale University, was a Fulbright scholar in Taiwan and China, and has a Ph.D. in Japan and China studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
