Grae Baxter

Grae Baxter was chief of staff to President Anne-Marie Slaughter in 2015. Before coming to New America, she held numerous leadership positions in higher education including: provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of the District of Columbia; executive director of undergraduate honors, fellowships and research at George Washington University, president of Mount Vernon College and executive dean of GW’s Mount Vernon campus; associate director of the Washington Metropolitan Area Consortium of Universities; assistant U. S commissioner of education; and vice president of the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.

Outside of higher education, Ms. Baxter provided management and legal consulting for non-profit organizations and served in an executive capacity for The Civil War Trust, the New York State Division of Human Rights, and HCX, an entrepreneurial health care venture.

Ms. Baxter earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in English Literature from Bryn Mawr College and her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center.
