Meredith Wadman: No excuse for cruelty to goats raised for medical research

In the first hearing its kind in 24 years, a California research company is currently before a judge in Washington, D.C. trying to account for its alleged violations of the Animal Welfare Act.The animals involved are some 5,500 goats used as living antibody-production factories. Santa Cruz Biotechnology keeps its herd in San Luis Obispo County. The scenery is lovely; the goats' living conditions often miserable.
