The Future of Pakistan’s Security
A Discussion with Pakistan's Secretary of Defence
Event
As a country, Pakistan is facing a number of challenges, both from within and without. The peaceful political transition after this May’s elections and ensuing efforts by the new government to squarely take on the three E’s -- Economy, Energy, and Extremism -- have ushered in new hopes, expectations and opportunities, but challenges to the state remain. Extremism is at the heart of Pakistan’s internal security threat, and combating it involves the state’s military apparatus. Under the strategic direction of the Ministry of Defence, Pakistan’s armed forces will play a crucial role in these efforts, especially during the pre- and post-2014 drawdown periods in Afghanistan, complimenting Pakistan’s ongoing efforts towards regional security.
The New America Foundation is pleased to welcome Lt. Gen. (Retd) Asif Yasin Malik, the Pakistani Secretary of Defence, and several senior officials from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Joint Staff Headquarters, and service headquarters to join in an off-the-record roundtable discussion about the opportunities and challenges facing Pakistan’s security environment through 2014 and beyond.
