New America NYC: The Meat Racket

Event

Americans consume more meat than almost any other country in the world. We eat 8 billion chickens, alone, per year. While some of us try to buy organic, grass-fed, and cage-free, those deceptive labels fail to tell us much about the conditions under which chickens are raised. They also tell us nothing about how factory farming has impacted the small town farmers who are forced into competition with one another, at the servitude of the oligarchs of the poultry industry, like Tyson. And they don't negate the reality that almost all of the meat Americans consume is produced within this system.

What do we, as informed citizens and consumers, still not understand about where our food comes from? How does the relationship relationship between Tyson, their farmers, and our meat affect us, and what can we do about it?

Join New America NYC for a conversation with The New York Times' Michael Moss and Christopher Leonard, who has exposed, in unprecedented detail, how Tyson has siezed power and spread their influence in the meat industry.
