Whistleblowers

Honesty in America from Washington to Trump
Event

This year, New America celebrates 20 years of creating and incubating the next big ideas that address some of the nation's and the world’s toughest problems. We are thinkers, researchers, problem-solvers, and storytellers, united by our goal to hold our nation to its highest ideals. We recognize the challenges presented by rapid technological and social change, and work to ensure that the solutions made possible by those changes lead to greater opportunity for all. As we reach forward toward the next 20 years of New America, we will strive to be an engine of American renewal, at home and abroad.

Revealing misconduct of the powerful is always dangerous. Whistleblowers, therefore, face a difficult choice: by challenging and exposing corruption, they perform a vital public service—yet they historically suffer for it. In her new book, Whistleblowers: Honesty in America from Washington to Trump, New America Cybersecurity Fellow Allison Stanger, frames whistleblowing as an important but unrecognized cousin of civil disobedience. She shows how its practice has held powerful elites accountable in America across the centuries. She asserts its goal—to prevent the abuse of power by those who hold it— is rooted in the very DNA of America, dating back to the country’s founding.

New America's Cybersecurity Initiative invites you to join Dr. Stanger as she discuss her book with a distinguished panel of experts in keeping the powerful accountable. With New America CEO as moderator, we welcome former DOD whistleblower Bunny Greenhouse, journalist David Sanger, and Executive Director of the National Security Institute at George Mason University and former Congressional staff Jamil Jaffer to reflect on the book and the lessons that we can draw from it.
