Listen to the Better Life Lab podcast on Slate, hosted by Brigid Schulte and produced by David Schulman.

When Jason Fried founded Basecamp, he and his partner made one key decision: they decided not to focus on growth, but on sustainability, and healthy work-life balance. He and his employees do great work, and lead great lives. (Basecamp is profitable enough to give every employee $5,000 a year toward taking a great vacation.) While Fried’s stance is unorthodox in an economy where success is literally measured by growth, economist Juliet Schor says Fried is onto something.
