The Better Life Lab is leading the national conversation about the evolution of gender roles and norms, family policy, and how we work and live. We envision a New America with the promise of real choices, without penalty, for all people at work and at home—real choices that will lead ultimately to real gender parity; to stable and healthy families and communities; to thriving, sustainable, and innovative businesses; and to the time for all people to lead richer and fuller lives. Formerly the Breadwinning & Caregiving Program, we at the Better Life Lab are policy entrepreneurs finding creative solutions to public problems; digging deeply into research, data and reporting to connect the dots; and telling the compelling stories that enlighten, inspire, and serve as calls to action.
Real choices. Real parity. All people.
Our Mission and Purpose
The Better Life Lab works to transform policy, practice, and culture so that people and families have the opportunity to live their best lives at work and at home. We drive change and informed debate with cutting-edge research, big ideas, storytelling, convening networks, and policy entrepreneurship.
- Reinvent gender equity to embrace the advancement of women, the evolving roles of men, and inclusive gender roles around work and care across the gender spectrum
- Fuel the evolution of work so that it is healthy, sustainable, fair, and effective
- Rewire social policy to meet the needs of diverse 21st-century families
The Better Life Lab takes an expansive view of what it means to be a family. We believe that the meaning of “family” has room for people of all genders and sexual orientations, multigenerational families, families of choice as well as blood, and relationships bound by ties of love, time, and care.
Work and family issues affect everyone. However, most work-family research focuses on the experiences of people in monogamous, heterosexual relationships. This limited view restricts the availability of information about the lives and realities of people who identify as queer, transgender, nonbinary, and/or gender nonconforming, as well as people of all genders whose relationships and responsibilities are not captured in the narrative of “traditional” family or work structures. We strive to mark the limits of our research, proactively include people who are often left out of these conversations, and engage with complexities. This is an ongoing effort.
We place women at the center of our work, as they are affected disproportionately by inequities in families and the workplace. However, we believe that people of all genders have crucial roles to play in transforming our culture and advancing gender equity for all.
The members of the Better Life Lab team are storytellers and conveners on work-life, gender equity, and social policy issues.
