Alex Hertel-Fernandez is the Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University. His research and teaching focus on politics and markets in the United States, especially labor and worker power and the politics of policy design. He previously served in the Biden-Harris Administration in the U.S. Department of Labor and the Office of Management and Budget and is the author or co-editor of three books, most recently The American Political Economy. His book in progress explores how a reimagined safety net could rebuild worker power and organization.
