Today, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Professor Alvaro Bedoya, the founding director of Georgetown University’s Center on Privacy & Technology, to the Federal Trade Commission. President Biden nominated him in September 2021 to fill a vacancy that left the five-member agency in a 2-2 deadlock. Bedoya was endorsed by a broad array of public interest advocates, including OTI.

The following quote can be attributed to Joshua Stager, deputy director of broadband and competition policy at New America’s Open Technology Institute:

“Professor Bedoya is an accomplished scholar with a proven record as an institution-builder and a consensus-builder. His expertise and dedication to the public interest are precisely what the American people need in an FTC commissioner. We congratulate him on his confirmation and look forward to the FTC returning to full capacity. There is so much work to be done, and we know Professor Bedoya will hit the ground running.”
