Elena Gooray is the Senior Editor and Writer for New America’s Central Communications team, conducting developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading for the organization’s research publications and producing content for general interest audiences. 

Previously, Gooray was an assistant op-ed editor at The Los Angeles Times editing op-eds, essays, and book reviews and excerpts. Before that she was an opinion coverage editor for The Philadelphia Inquirer and an associate editor at Pacific Standard magazine in Santa Barbara. Gooray has freelanced for other magazines and science publications and worked at the University of Pennsylvania helping students and scholars apply for research grants and scholarships. She has conducted workshops on opinion writing for scholar networks, legal groups, college students, and second graders.

Gooray has an MSc in cognition in science and society from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in cognitive science from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Montgomery County, Maryland, where she is from.
