Fellow, Future Security

Doug Levinson is a Fellow with New America’s Future Security Program, where he focuses on deterrence and state-sponsored hostage-taking. Levinson is a co-founder of R.A. Levinson & Associates and the creator of Integrity, an intelligence platform that covers 195 countries, forecasts geopolitical risk, and models how individual world leaders make decisions under pressure.

Levinson’s expertise spans U.S.-China policy, economic statecraft, and hostage policy. He previously worked as a Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment at the U.S. Department of State and was a staff member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The son of Robert “Bob” Levinson, the longest-held hostage in American history, he has drafted legislation on hostage-taking and wrongful detention. Levinson is also leading the global push for a “Hostage Article 5,” a framework under which the seizure of any partner nation’s citizen triggers a coordinated response from all of them. He currently lives in Spain while teaching international relations courses at Florida State University’s Valencia study abroad campus.
