Becky Sweger is the data engineering lead at New Practice Lab and a hands-on technical leader with expertise in data modeling and architecture. She discovered a passion for civic technology through her job as the Director of Data and Technology at the National Priorities Project, a federal budget research organization. That work led her to join 18F during the Obama administration, where she served as the technical lead for implementing the U.S. government's first open data law - the DATA Act - and the relaunch of USAspending.gov. As part of this years-long effort, Sweger navigated dozens of federal agencies to create and enforce a federal data standard that is still in use today. Sweger also has extensive private sector experience, where she has architected and written high-volume data delivery systems, championed user privacy, and led teams to mature software engineering practices. She has held leadership positions in higher education, health care, technology, and non-profit organizations. In her free time, Sweger enjoys the nature in Western Massachusetts, avidly reads science fiction, and spends time with her family.
