Upcoming Event: Opening Up Technology in Service of Teaching

Electronic content and digital interactivity are everywhere – except in most public school classrooms. How can schools and teachers take advantage of technology to help students excel?  What do teachers really need?

These kinds of questions are more often asked at the middle school, high school and college level. But few would argue that there is a need for a broader discussion of this topic across the full preK-12 spectrum. To that end, the Early Education Initiative is co-hosting an event next Monday with another New America program, the Open Technology Initiative. We’ll be showcasing a panel of four thought leaders who are crafting new tools for teachers, developing a vision for useful teacher training, and promoting smarter approaches to more open and accessible content in the digital arena. Panelists include Tim Vollmer, Open Policy Fellow with Creative Commons; Lynne Munson, President and Executive Director of Common Core; Michael Levine, Executive Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center; and Mark Osborne, Principal at Albany Senior High School in New Zealand (participating via Skype).

The intent is to conclude with an exploration of what policies at the local, state and federal level are needed to ease the way. The  discussion will take place at 9 a.m., here at the New America Foundation. It will also be streamed live. Please join us, and if you’d like to submit questions ahead of time, please do so in the comment field below. To RSVP, click here.
