The Votes are In: 2 SRCD Studies in Forthcoming Blog Posts

Two weeks ago, we asked you to choose which pieces of new research you’d like us to explore here at Early Ed Watch. You had a choice of two research posters from among a list of 10 that were presented at the recent biennial meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development in Montreal.

We received 108 votes by midnight on April 12 — far more than the 22 votes received in 2009 when we inaugurated this crowd-sourced approach to early childhood reporting. Thanks to everyone who took the time to let us know your preferences. We also received some constructive feedback from a reader who wished that we’d included more examples of research related to mathematics in the early years. Good point — we’ll keep a lookout for more math research in the future. We know that there were many, many great poster sessions that did not make our somewhat arbitrary list of 10. As anyone who has been to an SRCD meeting knows, there are literally thousands of new studies presented. It’s nirvana for research geeks and a tricky place for generalists who are trying to get a handle on the latest trends across multiple subject areas.

Here are the results – the top two will be the subject of forthcoming blog posts:

We’re looking forward to diving in and learning what we can about the preliminary results that came from these two studies. The authors of the research poster on executive function skills are Jess Versele, Christy D. Wolfe, Katherine C. Morasch, Morgan Hubble, Martha Ann Bell.  Most of them hail from Virginia Tech. The authors of the poster on social-emotional development are Susanne Ayers Denham, Hideko H. Bassett, Sara C. Kalb, Melissa S. Mincic. Most of them are based at George Mason University — another Virginia institution.
