Secretary of Energy Ernie Moniz spoke at the 126th meeting of the National Petroleum Council last week on July 29th. NPC, a federal advisory group first chartered in 1946, provides expert views to the Secretary of Energy and is a means of coordination within the oil and gas industry. Although its membership is largely drawn from industry, there are also think tanks and environmental groups invited as members, now including me as of last week. For this first meeting, I listened to a discussion about improving emergency preparedness, an out brief of a longer report. I also heard Secretary Moniz unabashedly tell this audience that the transition to a low carbon economy is inevitable, like “waves on the beach.”
