Event Tomorrow: The Tax-Man Giveth?

Tuesday morning, from 9am to 10:30am we’re hosting “The Tax-Man Giveth? Refunds, Savings, and Promoting Economic Security.”

Believe it or not, tax filing season is upon us and for millions of Americans it’s not just about fulfilling your civic duty (or staying on the right side of the IRS’ auditors), but tax time is a pivotal financial moment in each year. The asset building field has spent a great deal of time and effort investigating methods to build open the tax time moment and create more opportunity for Americans to use tax time to begin and continue the hard work of saving and asset building. In the past 10 years we’ve seen some real policy changes as a result of this work, Americans can now split their tax refund among different accounts (encouraging saving) and purchase savings bonds with their tax refund thanks to research and advocacy from the field.

We’re expecting that work to take another leap forward after this event. Intuit (the makers of Turbo Tax) has partnered with researchers from the Center for Social Devlopment at Washington University in St. Louis and other leaders in the field to perform the largest set of behavioral financial interventions in our history. The Refund to Savings (R2S) project was designed to see if and how behavioral interventions could promote savings at tax time among low-income Americans.

They’ll release the results of their study tomorrow at our event. We’ll also be releasing a new paper building on the experience of R2S and applying it to tax policy. Click here to RSVP and use this link to watch live, online at 9am tomorrow (no RSVP necessary.)
