New America’s Disability Policy initiative submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Education regarding its new data collection via the National Study of Special Education Spending (NSSES). The initiative provides recommendations to ensure that the data collection is sufficiently granular and representative to enable policymakers to make meaningful conclusions about special education resource needs.

The initiative recommends that the department ensure a representative sample of students with disabilities disaggregated by demographic characteristics, and that the department should collect data related to specific accommodation expenditures.
