Abstract

Internet platforms are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence and machine-learning tools in order to shape the content we see and engage with online. This is the final report in a series that explores different issues regarding how internet platforms use automated tools to shape the content we see, and influence how this content is delivered to us. This first report in this series focused on how automated tools can be leveraged to moderate content online. The second report focused on how internet platforms deploy algorithms to rank and curate content in search engine results and in news feeds. The third report focused on how platforms use artificial intelligence to optimize the targeting and delivery of advertisements. The fourth report focused on how platforms use automated tools to make recommendations to users. This final report builds on these four previous reports as well as a series of events hosted by OTI on these topics to provide further analysis and recommendations on how internet platforms, civil society, researchers, and policymakers can promote greater fairness, accountability, and transparency around these algorithmic decision-making practices.

Acknowledgments

We would like to thank the many stakeholders across civil society and industry who have taken the time to talk to us about algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency over the past year. We would also like to thank Craig Newmark Philanthropies for its generous support of our work in this area.
