In 2025, New America’s RethinkAI initiative launched a practical framework for governing artificial intelligence in city governments. Based on more than 40 interviews and pilot projects in Boston, New York City, and San Jose, the framework translated AI ethics into actionable guidance on procurement, oversight, and public engagement. The tool is becoming a reference point for local governments adopting AI responsibly.
