The Crisis of Zionism

In its 1948 declaration of independence, Israel committed to “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex.” Today, those fundamental democratic ideals are at stake. In Israel, the continued occupation of the West Bank and an emboldened conservative government are putting Israeli democracy at risk. While in the United States, the refusal of major Jewish organizations to defend democracy and speak out for human rights in the Jewish state is alienating many young liberal Jews from Zionism itself.  In The Crisis of Zionism, Peter Beinart lays out in chilling detail the looming danger to Israeli democracy and the American Jewish establishment’s refusal to confront it.
