Employment and jobs are on everyone’s minds.  The White House recently hosted a jobs summit.Unemployment and underemployment in the U.S. and abroad is being reported throughout the media. However, less reported is that working conditions in many countries around the world have deteriorated as rapidly as jobs have been lost–and this impacts many more people. Working conditions impact our health, the amount of time we can spend with family, our options during significant moments and whether we can keep our jobs.

The argument is often made that there is a trade off to be made between minimum standards of working conditions and employment.  That raising working standards leads to higher unemployment and a less competitive economy.
Join the New America Foundation’s Workforce and Family Program for a discussion with Dr. Jody Heymann of McGill University as she details her recent, global analysis of the relationship between labor conditions, national competitiveness, and unemployment rates in 190 countries. The findings are dramatic and have implications for American economic policy.
