This event has been postponed.

Short Circuit follows Number 5, a clever robot who, after being struck by lightning, gains sentience, and then escapes from a military prototyping lab and into the home of a pacifist, where it begins a journey of self-discovery. In its original review of the film in 1986, The New York Times called Short Circuit a “cheerful, inoffensive fantasy”—but today’s debates about sentience and human-robot relations make it feel a bit less fantastical.

Join Future Tense on Sep. 14 to watch and discuss the film with Shane Harris and Katherine Mangu-Ward. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
