In August, Pakistan’s parliament elected Imran Khan Prime Minister after his party won a plurality in the country’s national elections. Khan promised to create a “New Pakistan” cleansed of dynastic politics and corruption, and one that puts “Pakistan First” in foreign policy. In pursuing such fundamental changes, Khan will have to manage high expectations, a formidable political opposition, and a security establishment heavily involved in national security.
To discuss the rise, future, and impact of Imran Khan’s political and policy agenda, New America welcomes Madiha Afzal, a nonresident fellow at Brookings’ Global Economy and Development and Foreign Policy programs, Uzair Younus, Director of Albright Stonebridge Group’s South Asia Practice, and Moeed Yusuf, Associate Vice President of the United States Institute of Peace’s Asia Center. The discussion will be moderated by Shamila N. Chaudhary, Senior South Asia Fellow with New America’s International Security Program and former Director for Pakistan and Afghanistan on the National Security Council.
