In 2025, New America’s Political Reform program helped bring fusion voting—an electoral mechanism that allows a candidate to appear on multiple party lines—to the forefront. Through research, public commentary, and targeted convenings, the team supported the development of a shared understanding of how fusion voting could inject competition into the two-party system and strengthen voter choice. This work helped shift fusion voting from an academic theory to a policy option discussed by practitioners, advocates, and reform coalitions across multiple states.
