Building Early Education Leaders

A Closer Look at How States and Districts are Equipping Principals to Support Young Learners

Full Principal Opener

Abstract

Elementary school principals play a vital role in determining the quality of care and education that young children receive. In fact, research shows that, after teachers, principals are the most important in-school factor impacting student achievement. Principals often function as both administrative and instructional leaders, and can be responsible for everything from managing finances to hiring staff, choosing a curriculum, and evaluating teachers. And yet, many elementary school principals enter their roles without the knowledge and skills they need to best serve young students. A small but growing number of states and districts are investing in professional learning for principals to equip them to strengthen pre-K and the early grades. In this brief, New America details visits to three such programs around the country in San Antonio, TX; Fergus Falls, MN; and Montgomery, AL.
