New Report on Smart Cyber Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, New America’s Cybersecurity
Initiative
released a policy report outlining the steps that Congress could
take to help improve the United States’ cybersecurity posture and catalyze a
better marketplace for cyber insurance coverage. Cybersecurity
Fellow
, Shareholder at Greenberg Traurig,
LLP
, and author of the report, says that, “Security issues stemming from
connectivity are not diminishing, but security spending in the private sector
has not kept pace with the rising costs. For years, Congress has contemplated
passing bills that would increase America’s cybersecurity for multiple
sessions, but this year they have an opportunity to pass a bill that would
strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity.”

The report examines the current cyber-legislation proposed
or discussed in the 114th Congress, then proposes an alternative
approach focused on fostering a better cybersecurity insurance marketplace,
which would support market driven cyber hygiene.
