OTI Urges Senate to Reject Anti-Consumer NDAA Amendment

REINS Act Must Be Stopped In Its Tracks

Hey, Congress, No Time to Leave the Dance Floor_image.jpeg

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Penn.) may introduce an amendment that would codify the REINS Act (S. 21), a bill that New America’s Open Technology Institute strongly opposes. The REINS Act would block all new major regulations unless Congress approves them within a narrow 70-day window—an unrealistic barrier that would effectively prevent federal agencies from issuing new rules to protect the American people. Toomey’s amendment would be offered to an unrelated defense authorization bill that the Senate is currently debating on the floor.

The following quote can be attributed to Joshua Stager, policy counsel for New America’s Open Technology Institute:

“We strongly oppose any amendment to shoe-horn the REINS Act into the defense authorization bill. The REINS Act would severely weaken the ability of federal agencies to protect the American people, part of a campaign to destroy the administrative state through a death by a thousand cuts. We urge all senators to vote no on any motion to advance the REINS Act. This legislation must be stopped in its tracks.”
