Secretary Gary Locke on Innovation and the Future of Spectrum Sharing

Under the recently released Executive Memorandum on spectrum reform, the Commerce Department and FCC will identify 500 MHz of spectrum for allocation to the private sector over the next 10 years. To achieve this goal, the nation will need to increase its reliance on spectrum sharing technology. The military and other federal spectrum occupants typically cannot relocate off a frequency band – but could potentially share the unused capacity.

Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke will describe the tremendous potential for greater spectrum sharing and the economy-wide importance of sustaining U.S. leadership in IT and mobile broadband. He will also preview the DOC’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration convening of technical experts on the development of these technologies next week in Boulder, Colorado.

Following his remarks, a panel of experts on spectrum sharing will discuss the future of spectrum sharing, including the technology and policy challenges.
