Sites of Social Change: Tools for Creating Inclusive Classrooms

A troubling spate of incidents nationwide has brought issues of race and racism to the forefront in classrooms across the country, leaving educators to grapple with many difficult questions. Central among them: How do you broach these topics in schools? And, more broadly: How do you create more inclusive learning spaces for all students?

Dr. Marcia Chatelain, an Eric & Wendy Schmidt Fellow at New America, author of South Side Girls: Growing up in the Great Migration, and creator of the #FergusonSyllabus Twitter campaign, will explore these questions and point to concrete ways educators can advance social change in their classrooms. An Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at Georgetown University, Dr. Chatelain has contributed to the national conversation on the education of African American youth, race in America, and social justice movements.
