Economic development is the key mechanism that drives how and why urban neighborhoods change. In recent years, Indianapolis city leaders have begun taking steps to directly address the city’s historically inequitable and exclusionary economic development and growth. But do we really understand and agree on why our growth has been and continues to be inequitable and exclusionary?

In her recent dissertation, “Taken Spaces: Perceptions of Inequity and Exclusion in Urban Development,” Dr. Abbey Chambers offers new insights into this question.

Join Dr. Chambers–researcher, civic leader and former New America Indianapolis Resident Fellow–and Molly Martin for a conversation about her findings and what she believes it means for neighborhoods across the city and, potentially, across the Midwest.

This event is presented by the IUPUI – New America Public Problem-Solving Partnership, a collaborative effort by New America Indianapolis and the American Studies Doctoral Program at IUPUI. The collaborative seeks to generate and promote research-based solutions to public-problems while building a more diverse talent pool for civic leadership in Central Indiana.

The New America INside Out series highlights Indiana-based civic innovators to help their ideas reach new audiences, within the state and across the country.
