More PreK-3rd on Video: South Shore in Seattle

Last spring we released a video on how the public school system in Montgomery County, Md., raised student acheivement by implementing a comprehensive strategy that reached from the pre-K years on up through the third grade. Now there’s another video in this genre titled  “A New Beginning for American Education.”  It’s worth checking out.

 

“A New Beginning” makes a case for PreK-3^rd alignment by providing compelling images of the work that is being done by the young students of South Shore School in Seattle. South Shore, an elementary school led by principal Sherrie Encarnacion, is creating an aligned, integrated curriculum to keep students engaged and prevent the benefits of attending high-quality Pre-K from fading out in the elementary years. Early data, according to the video, shows that South Shore students are making more gains in reading and math — especially math — than students of similar demographics elsewhere.

  

The video features Bette Hyde from the Washington State Department of Early Learning, who is also behind the impressive efforts in Bremerton, Wash., to improve children’s preparedness for school.  The video also includes parents, teachers, and students at South Shore School. It was produced by The New School Foundation and The Foundation for Child Development (which is also one of the foundations that supports our work).
