In Short

Elizabeth Warren Continues to Make Sense

Not many heroes have emerged from the morass of the financial meltdown. But the voice of Elizabeth Warren has repeatedly stood out. Not only did she answer the call when Senator Reid tapped her to oversee the implementation of the TARP stabilization program, but she has repeatedly offered a clear and sober account of how the economy was taken to the edge of the economic abyss by increasingly risky financial practices.

On many occasions, she has explained how unregulated financial products ending up contributed to the largest loss of household wealth and assets in our history. But she also has contributed mightily to the discussion of what kinds of policies are needed to make sure this can’t happen again. In this spirit, she has played a major role in developing the case for creating an independent consumer financial protection agency, whose sole job would be to ensure that financial products and services are delivered in ways that protect, rather than harm, consumers.

I’ve seen her present numerous times in congressional hearings and on serious news programs. She always makes a strong case. But linking to those would be less fun than watching her in action with Jon Stewart.

Actually, I think she is getting pretty riled up these days as she seems to recognize the coming battles over financial reform are going to have to be waged in ways that surmount the interests of those that don’t mind the current rules of the game. She definitely feels the urgency of the coming debate and I largely agree with both her diagnosis and prognosis. Watch as she tells Stewart at the end of the interview:

“This is not a losing battle. This really is the moment. The chips are all on the table here. We’re going to write what the American economy looks like for 50 years going forward. And Right now the CEOs have any real change bottled up in the Senate. God Bless, Barney Frank, he got it through the House. It is there in the Senate. The President says I will sign it.

If you have never written a senator before, now is the time.

It is simple, this is America’s middle class. We’ve hacked at it, and chipped at it, and pulled on it for 30 years now. And now there’s no more to do. Either we fix this problem going forward, or the game really is over.”
