Gary Rivlin, Author of Broke, USA at New America Tomorrow

Tomorrow afternoon we’ll be hosting the author of Broke, USA, Gary Rivlin at an event here at New America.

Broke, USA tells the tale of rise of the poverty industry, the huge array of businesses geared toward providing low-income Americans with payday loans, check cashing services, rapid tax refunds and providing big profits to the operators of those businesses. As Congress has just created the first federal organization purely directed toward protecting consumers of financial products, those products and the industry that houses them face significant federal regulation for the first time.

Broke, USA goes a long way in explaining that story from the perspective of the families that are enmeshed in the “fringe” and from some of the key figures who made that sector into the multi-billion dollar industry that exists today. It should be an interesting session, please join us!
