The EduJobs Rollercoaster Ride of 2010
Many of our readers in public schools have been watching and wondering whether lawmakers will be able to muster votes to pass the so-called “edujobs” bill, a supplemental spending measure that would extend funding to states to avoid teacher layoffs. Watching the news on this has felt a little like riding a roller coaster — it’s up, it’s down, it’s over a hump, oops, no it’s not! Wait, yes it is!
Today a vote in the Senate puts passage of the bill within the realm of possibility again. Read our colleague Jennifer Cohen’s blog post at Ed Money Watch, which provides a great timeline of what has happened up until now and where the money is coming from to pay for it. (Hint: Medicaid pharmacy reimbursements, EITC, Striving Readers, student aid, and the Ready-to-Teach program may see some cuts.)
