Sesame Street Takes You Out of Summer and into School

The following is a guest post by Sarah Sweney, an Early Education Initiative intern.

Summer is coming to an end and kids are heading back to school– but it’s not too late to have some fun. Sesame Street has been entertaining and educating kids and parents alike for over 40 years, and in the spirit of preparation for back to school activities, here is a selection of clips from this legendary show that will be sure to delight your inner child.

“Mad Men” is a highly rated show about the lives of advertising executives in New York during the 1960s.  Sesame Street uses this theme to teach about emotions:

Healthy eating is important, and combined with learning about all the words one can make with the letter K, this clip bridges the gap between something delicious and education:

“True Blood” is a popular show taking advantage of the vampire craze.  Sesame Street’s clip “True Mud” teaches a rhyming lesson:

Here is “A’s Anatomy,” a parody of “Grey’s Anatomy” and other medical dramas.  In this clip, Grover and his assistants teach us about the letter A:

Crime dramas are very popular with adults, but kids can still get in on the fun.  Sesame Street features the “Special Letters Unit” to teach viewers about the letter M:

These day it seems that there is an “app” for just about everything.  But maybe not.  The natives of Sesame Street question this logic:

Old Spice may have led you to believe that the product could whisk you away to a tropical island.  Grover’s version just claims that you can “smell like a monster” and learn the word “on.”  Anything is possible:

Getting kids to eat their vegetables can be a daunting task.  But when one young man eats aspaaragus, his whole outlook changes. This play on “West Side Story” teaches that eating your veggies is not all bad:

Cookie Monster loves cookies, so when the weather suddenly changes, he is one happy monster:
