FY12 Early Ed Budget Update

Congress is under increasing pressure to pass a stopgap spending bill this week, as the current continuing resolution will expire at the end of September. Late last night, the House passed a funding bill the Senate was quick to veto this morning due to disagreements over funding for environmental programs.

But until Congress passes a 2012 appropriations bill, it will be difficult to say exactly how much money the Department of Education and other agencies have to spend on education over the coming year. Also this week, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved an education funding bill that would maintain most programs at similar funding levels; restore money to the Striving Readers program, which was not funded in 2011; and increase funding for the Promise Neighborhoods competitive grant program from $29 million to $60 million. The House Appropriations committee has yet to hold its hearings on education appropriations for 2012.
