Climate Change Readiness
Climate change is already affecting communities across the country, from melting permafrost in Alaska to the prolonged drought in California to devastating storms everywhere from New York to New Orleans. Many communities have started adapting to these challenges by increasing their preparedness for disasters, responding to disasters and rebuilding, or anticipating changes through resilience. This new initiative will look at some of these adaptation strategies, identify “climate hot zones,” or parts of the country at high risk for climate effects, and will explore the role of veterans and active duty military in building community resilience and preparedness.
By researching, writing, speaking and collaborating, New America seeks to influence public policy and broader public opinion on the importance of natural resources to national security. Specific topics include energy, water, food, minerals, and environmental change.
