Having influence pays. So well, in fact, that the DC metro area is already home to five of the six wealthiest counties in the country when measuring by median household income. Beyond that, the area is home to 10 of the top 20.

Why is that? Yes, federal jobs can pay good salaries. But Washington’s power attracts money from everywhere. Corporations spend about $3 billion a year on lobbying the federal government’s employees to give them better treatment through regulation and legislation. As Lee Drutman at The Atlantic points out, that’s more than the country spends to run the entirety of the House and Senate.
