Jordan McCarthy

Technologist, Open Technology Institute

Jordan's prior work as a technologist at the Open Technology Institute was guided by the principle that information technologies should support global social progress, not the other way around. Jordan served as the coordinator of platform operations and engineering for Measurement Lab, a global network measurement platform that allows researches to conduct free, open research on the availability, reliability and openness of Internet connectivity around the world. Jordan also contributed to various dimensions of OTI's work on digital privacy and security, and is trying to figure out better ways to discuss those topics in meaningful and engaging ways, both within and outside of OTI. Jordan has previously contributed to the Commotion Wireless project, designing a high-speed firmware build system for the project's router firmware and spearheading development on the project's Linux client.

Jordan has a decade of experience in technical education, writing, and system administration, predominantly in higher educational contexts. He has also volunteered with a number of progressive organizations and initiatives, including Fight for the Future, Access Now, and several groups focused on promoting digital literacy and inclusion.

Jordan holds a B.A, in science, technology & society, and an M.A. in digital media studies, both from Stanford University. In both of these programs Jordan's research focused on the social, psychological, and political implications of emergent habits and norms surrounding digital technologies, and explored how those practices might nudged in directions that make them more conducive to thoughtful discourse and global justice.
