Amalia Deloney

Research Fellow, Open Technology Institute

Amalia Deloney is the Grassroots Policy Director at the Center for Media Justice. Born in Guatemala, she worked for many years at the Main Street Project—a MAG-Net anchor—in her hometown of Minneapolis. While there, she co-directed a nationally recognized four-state rural Latino capacity-building initiative called The Raíces Project. Amalia has over 15 years of experience in community and cultural organizing, with a specific interest in human rights, cultural rights and traditional knowledge. At CMJ, Amalia’s uses her extensive experience for field-building, community-building, and policy advocacy.

Amalia is a 2004 recipient of the Mansfield Upper Midwest International Human Rights Fellowship, a 2007 Salzburg Seminar Fellow during their "Immigration and Inclusion: Rethinking National Identity" program, and a recipient of a Gaea Sea Change fellowship (forthcoming). Additionally, Amalia is a recipient of the 2005 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Minnesota's "25 On the Rise"—an award given to 25 Latinos under the age of 40 in Minnesota, as well as the 2007 recipient of Macalester College's "Young Alumni Award" given to graduates who have demonstrated outstanding involvement and achievement in their post-graduate education and community contributions.

Nationally, Amalia is a board member of the Indigenous Women’s Network, Main Street Project and the Media and Democracy Coalition. Amalia earned her B.A. in Urban Studies and History from Macalester College and her J.D. with a focus on Social Justice from Hamline University School of Law.
