Promoting a Secure Internet

To gain and keep the trust of those who use the network, the Internet must be secure. As our commerce, government, and personal lives move online, the security of our data has never been more important, nor more under threat. OTI has been extremely active, as a coordinating and convening voice, as well as a source of quality independent research, in defense of strong encryption — the lynchpin of successful cybersecurity. In addition to protecting encrypted products and services against wrongheaded government mandates that might weaken everyone’s security, OTI has also been at the forefront of the fight to reform government surveillance, helping to secure a historic victory in 2015 with the passage of the USA FREEDOM Act. Now, OTI is preparing for the next big fight, educating policymakers and the public in anticipation of 2017’s debate over whether Congress should reauthorize the FISA Amendments Act that is used to justify much of the government’s mass surveillance of the Internet. Just how massive is it? That’s a tough question, which is why we also have a project focused on engaging companies and articulating best practices around how they report information about how much information they turn over to law enforcement and intelligence investigators.
