A Letter to Assistant AG William Baer Regarding Amazon

Policy Paper
July 13, 2015

In July of 2015, Barry Lynn and Douglas Preston, the founder of Authors United, collaborated on a letter to William Baer, the Assistant Attorney General for antitrust, regarding Amazon's growing power over the book market.

We believe that Amazon has gathered unprecedented market power over the world of books, which many experts have asserted make it both a monopoly in its role as a seller of books to the public andĀ a monopsony in its role as a buyer of books from publishers. We believe Amazon has been misusingĀ that power in many ways, and we seek the benefit of your office to address this situation.
