Nikole Hannah-Jones Awarded 2017 MacArthur 'Genius' Grant

National Fellow Nikole Hannah-Jones was named a 2017 MacArthur Fellow and awarded a MacArthur Foundation ‘Genius’ grant for her investigative journalism. The Foundation praised her work "chronicling the persistence of racial segregation in American society, particularly in education, and reshaping national conversations around education reform."

This is the second year in a row that a New America National Fellow has been awarded a 'Genius' grant — Lauren Redniss was selected last year for her work in visual nonfiction.

Nikole Hannah-Jones is an Emerson fellow at New America. Hannah-Jones is a reporter at the New York Times Magazine. Prior to that, she was a reporter at the investigative reporting firm ProPublica and at newspapers in Oregon and North Carolina.
