RESCHEDULED: The Future of Work in America

Part Time Workers and Public Policy in the New Gig/Sharing Economy
Event

The American workforce is undergoing a profound shift. Demographic, technological and social changes, combined with shifts away from manufacturing to service jobs have eroded the assumption of full time work in the U.S. The impacts of the Great Recession linger and too many full time jobs have been replaced with part time ones.

Is the traditional American career path being replaced by a "Gig" as part of a "Sharing" economy where we all need to be entrepreneurs to survive? What are the implications for American families of related wage, benefit and asset trends of such a new economy? What can American policy-makers learn from how other countries have regulated new economy companies like Uber and Airbnb? If part time work is an increasing option for Americans, what public policies must change to address these challenges and opportunities?
