Federal Programs

The federal government funds several grant programs aimed at assisting disadvantaged students attending middle school or high school. The programs help and encourage students to complete high school and go on to postsecondary education. The Department of Education awards grants for the programs, which include the three TRIO programs – Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math-Science – and the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP). Institutions of higher education, public and private community organizations, and secondary schools implement the programs with federal funds.

TRIO Programs

TRIO includes eight separate programs, three of which provide services to support students in middle school and high school go on to postsecondary education.

GEAR UP Program

GEAR UP is a grant program that Congress funds to better prepare low-income and first-generation students for postsecondary education and increase the number of postsecondary students from these backgrounds.
