Carnegie Foundation Looks Beyond Education’s Stress on the Credit Hour

“There’s an urgency to finding an alternative,” said Amy Laitinen, deputy director for higher education at New America, a Washington-based think tank. Ms. Laitinen’s 2012 report, “Cracking the Credit Hour,” questioned the utility of the Carnegie Unit. “The stakes are high for students, who need degrees and skills and are borrowing unprecedented amounts of money to pay for it.”
